FAQ: Residence permit


1. WHAT IS LONG-TERM RESIDENTS OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA EUROPEAN COMMUNITY RESIDENCE PERMIT?
Long-term residents of the Republic of Lithuania European Community residence permit (hereafter a permanent residence permit) is a document entitling the alien to reside in the Republic of Lithuania and certifying the aliens official status of permanent resident.

2. UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS A PERMANENT RESIDENCE PERMIT MAY BE ISSUED IF THE ALIEN:
1. meets the conditions of entry set in Schengen Borders Code;
2. has a valid document evidencing he has sickness insurance coverage when in the cases established by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania he is not covered by compulsory health insurance, or in the cases and according to the procedure established by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania he has the confirmed commitment of a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania or an alien residing in the Republic of Lithuania to pay charges for health care services provided to him during his residence period in the Republic of Lithuania;
3. has adequate means of subsistence and/or receives regular revenue which is sufficient for his stay in the Republic of Lithuania.

3. FOR HOW LONG A PERMANENT RESIDENCE PERMIT IS ISSUED TO AN ALIEN?
A permanent residence permit is issued to an alien for a 5 year period. After this period the permit shall be replaced.

WHAT DOCUMENT CONFIRMS AN EU MEMBER STATE NATIONALS RIGHT TO RESIDE IN LITHUANIA?
The right for an EU Member State national to reside in the Republic of Lithuania is confirmed by the certificate of a set form established by the Minister of the Interior.

The certificate confirming the right for an EU Member State national to reside in the Republic of Lithuania may be issued to an EU Member State national if he/she:

1. has been legally residing in the Republic of Lithuania for the last 5 years;
2. has retained his right to citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania in the manner prescribed by the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania;
3. is a person of Lithuanian descent;
4. has entered the Republic of Lithuania for residence joining a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania as his family member.

A family member of the EU Member State national who is not an EU Member State national shall be issued the EU residence permit to certify his right to reside in the Republic of Lithuania which shall be executed for the period of 10 years to be extended after the expiration of the period.
